Evo all + xl202 + viper 2 way rf kit = car starts then shuts off (sometimes twice)

0 votes
My car (2014 ford escape) starts with viper two way remote press, then turns off after 5 seconds.  Sometimes it starts twice, each time shutting down after 5 seconds.

Options A1-A11, C1, D1, D1.6, and H5 set to ON

My research tells me I need to set the tach at the viper control center (antenna) however the LED doesn't blink.  All componants are talking to one another, but the car won't stay on.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Tach mode has nothing to do with the remotes in this case.

You would only need to worry about tach if you had installed a full viper brain. In the XL202/rf config you have, the remotes basically just tell the Evo to start or stop and the evo handles everything else.

As Jesus says, try 3-lock-start. Unplug the XL202 when you do this. This way you will eliminate the remotes from the equation in case they are some how sending a stop command.

Also, try a takeover. Start the car with the key, then hit the start button on the remote. Then remove the key and see if the engine stays running.

Do you have park lights hooked up? If you accidentally tapped into the brake light wiring, you will get this exact symptom. The car shuts off as soon as the parklights are triggered with the Evo because its actually feeding brake and thus shutting down. (Although it should not try to start again if this is the issue)

Since it cranks and starts, its likely not a trasnponder/bypass problem. I would triple check your ground and CAN connections.

These escapes are typically trouble-free and bulletproof.

Thanks for chiming in Jeremy,  though in our experience, quadruple-checking seems to fix/find these pesky connection errors/issues.  (t-taps, scotchlocks should've been already caught in the "double checking" part of the troubleshooting)
Yes. Sorry. Triple checking is not enough! Quadruple it is!
Sorry guys, just got back from a business trip and back working on it. I unplugged the xl202 and 3x lock starts and runs fine. Also works with take over. After plugging back in the xl202 I can't get the viper remote to start the car at all or work with takeover. I only hooked up the two plugs under the steering column and can hi and lo. I did however have a little trouble swapping the blue and white wires when hooking up the xl202. If those wires are a little loose could that cause the car to shut off after 5 seconds before and now not at all? I really don't think I tapped into the parking lights or brake lights. Not sure how I would have done that on accident Thank you for working through this with me!

In your particular case, everything happens on those 2 wires (blue and white on the datalink cable)

Make sure that your XL202 does not need a firmware update, (you'll need to call Viper/Dei for this) Explain what RF kit you are using with the xl202, no need to elaborate on what system the xl202 is connecting to since they will just say it's the evo-all's fault, which we know works fine since it can start the vehicle in 3xlock standalone mode.

The evo-all is doing all the work in this particular installation, your viper remotes and antenna+xl202 is just a "range extender/ rf kit"

We communitcate with the xl202 through D2D protocol, we know this protocol works with all DEI products (autostart, viper, etc)

The XL202 however communicates with the antenna using specific firmwares depending on the remotes and antenna being used.  See here: https://www.directechs.com/product.aspx?sku=XL202#firmwaretab

This is the extent of the help we can provide with your Viper product since obviously we are not the manufacturer of said products.

I hope this helps

Yea, intermittent connections anywhere can cause odd stuff to happen. Check those swapped pins and make sure its right.

And re-flash the XL202 regardless, even if it seems to be flashed appropriately. Sometimes re-learning the remotes to it will alleviate problems.

Worst case scenario, you may have a bad XL202. Typically the are OK, but I do get a couple bad ones per year.

Please try remote starting using the oem remote by pressing lock 3x. And let us know if the vehicle starts normally this way.
